Build a readership that lasts.
This is the operational guide on how we run your campaign—what happens behind the scenes, how to read your portal, and how we compound results book after book.
The Strategy
Why most indie books vanish—and the one operational shift that fixes it.
The Core Thesis
- Writing a good book is no longer enough; discovery is a system, not a lottery.
- Scattered marketing stacks kill momentum through data loss and friction.
- Atomic Shelf operates as one connected orbit: Video → Reviews → Listing → List → Ads.
1.1 — The 3.2× Lift · The Baseline
The average Atomic Shelf author sees a 3.2× sales lift in 90 days. This isn't derived from one tactic; it's the compounding of five. We'll break down the actual data from 200+ clients to show why isolated tactics (just ads, just reviews, just video) inevitably plateau.
1.2 — The Fragmented Stack Trap · The Problem
Most authors juggle 5 separate vendors: a video freelancer, a deal newsletter ($400+/deal), an ARC platform ($400+/listing), a separate ad manager, and a review service. None of them share data. We'll map out the real monthly cost ($1,500–$5,000+) and expose the gaps where momentum dies.
1.3 — One Orbit, One Team · The Solution
Your book sits at the center of one orbit. Video (TikTok, Shorts, Reels) drives discovery; Reviews build trust; the Listing converts; the Reader List (ShelfMates/StoryPals) owns the audience; and Ads close the loop. Every stage feeds the next.
- Open your portal.
- Locate the "Where Your Campaign Stands" card.
- Audit which milestones are already ✅ and which are 🎯. This is your operational baseline.
The Content Engine
60+ videos a month—how they are built, where they go, and how to read them.
Engine Mechanics
- Production follows a strict 14-step sequence to ensure quality and velocity.
- The Content Library is your operational source of truth for hooks and scripts.
- Metrics dictate strategy: Engagement Rate (benchmark 6.5%) is the north star.
2.1 — The 14-Step Production Cycle · Operations
Every video moves through 14 stages: Hook Written → Script Approved → Seed Images Created → B-Roll Sourced → First Draft Complete → Sent to You for Review → Approved by You → Captions Added → Hashtags & Hooks Set → Thumbnail Created → Posted to TikTok → Posted to YouTube → This Week's Stats Logged → New Followers Added.
In Maintenance Mode, this collapses to 7 essential steps to preserve budget while keeping the algorithm fed.
2.2 — Navigating the Content Library · Workflow
Each week's videos are listed by name, featuring copyable fields for Hooks, Descriptions, Hashtags, and Voiceover scripts. Review scripts before production and flag any hook that doesn't match your book's voice immediately via the portal chat.
2.3 — Reading TikTok Performance · Analytics
Your TikTok section tracks Core metrics (Views, Likes, Comments, Shares, Saves, Engagement Rate), Reach & Audience (Profile Visits, New Followers), and Watch Behavior (Avg Watch Time, Video Completions).
Benchmark
The Engagement Rate benchmark is 6.5%. Above that = green; below = orange. If it drops below 4% for two weeks, trigger a strategy chat with your editor.
2.4 — Reading YouTube Performance · Analytics
YouTube tracks the same core metrics, plus daily engaged views across all videos (a line chart). Watch Hours matter for monetization thresholds. CTR % tells you whether your thumbnails and titles are earning the click.
2.5 — The Top Videos Table · Actionable Data
Videos with views appear in the leaderboard. Zero-view videos get their own "Awaiting first views" section—these are republish candidates, not failures. Know the difference: leaders get amplified, zeros get reformatted.
- Open Content Library → expand Week 1 → copy any hook to your clipboard.
- Open TikTok Performance → find your Engagement Rate. Is it above or below 6.5%?
- Open Top Videos → identify your #1 performer by views.
The Trust Layer
Honest ratings on your listing before you spend a dollar on ads.
Trust Architecture
- Reviews are not a one-off purchase; they are a stage in the compounding system.
- Atomic Shelf bundles ARCs into a coordinated package, synchronizing with video and ads.
- Listing copy and A+ content must be optimized to convert the trust when traffic arrives.
3.1 — Where Reviews Come From · Market Map
Three standalone options most authors consider:
| Approach | Cost | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget platform | ~$10/book | Fast volume | Low quality, no video coordination |
| Pro review co. | $400–$850 | Industry reach | ~15% review rate, standalone |
| Prestige review | $400–$750 | Established brand | 7–9 week turnaround |
Atomic Shelf syncs ARC reviews into the timeline: video warms the audience → ARC readers add early social proof → listing copy converts → ads close the loop.
3.2 — ARC Campaigns by Tier · Allocation
| Tier | Price | ARC Reviews Targeted |
|---|---|---|
| Spark | $20/mo | — |
| Foundation | $79/mo | — |
| Momentum | $249/mo | 10 per campaign |
| Growth | $499/mo | 25 per campaign |
3.3 — Listing Copy & A+ Content · Conversion
Every tier from Foundation up includes listing optimization. Your team audits and rewrites Book descriptions, A+ Content blocks, and Backend keywords. When readers land on your page, the trust they arrived with actually converts.
- Open the Amazon Performance section.
- Note your current Review Count and Average Rating.
- Set a 90-day target for both metrics.
The Compounding Math
Why each stage makes the next one cheaper.
The System Logic
- Skipping stages is the most expensive shortcut in indie publishing.
- Cold traffic to an unproven listing destroys ad efficiency.
- Momentum carries forward across multiple books.
4.1 — The Funnel, Animated · The Sequence
Five nodes light up in sequence in your portal: Content → Reviews → Listing → Reader list → Advertising. Each stage feeds the next.
4.2 — The Common Shortcut (and why it fails) · Failure Analysis
Most authors go: Write book → Jump straight to Amazon ads. The result: cold traffic lands on a listing with no social proof, no audience recognition, no reviews. CTRs collapse. ACOS spikes. The author concludes "ads don't work" — when really, the sequence was broken.
4.3 — The Atomic Shelf Sequence · Execution
Video warms the audience → Reviews earn the trust → Listing converts the traffic → Ads close the loop. Across multiple books, one team managing all five stages means every launch builds on the last. Shared data. One strategy. Momentum that carries forward.
4.4 — Reading Your Roadmap · Milestones
Six milestones, tracked in real time: YouTube editor access → YouTube posting live → TikTok set up & posting → Regular posting underway → Growing your TikTok followers → Traffic & reach campaigns running. Each milestone has a "done" state and a "pending" state.
- Open Campaign Roadmap.
- Identify your next pending milestone.
- Send your editor a message in the chat asking what you can do to help unlock it.
Portal Operations
Every chart, every tile, every button—what it means and when to use it.
Operational Cadence
- Review the Hero card daily for staleness.
- Log KDP data monthly to measure true ROI.
- Use weekly thumbs feedback to steer content direction rapidly.
5.1 — The Hero Card · Status
Top of your portal. Shows greeting + book title + author, status pills (Active/Trial, Maintenance Mode, Week N · Day N, Updated X ago, Genre, Editor), and four stats: Current Week, Weeks Elapsed, Total Views, TikTok Followers. The "Updated X ago" pill turns red if stale (3+ days).
5.2 — "Where Your Campaign Stands" · Snapshot
Two columns: Done so far (top 5 milestones reached) and Coming next (top 4 pending items). If you have content ready but not yet published, a gold banner explains the rollout schedule.
5.3 — This Week in Progress · Execution
The most important card. Shows Week Start/End dates, Progress bar (X/14 steps), full checklist with ✓ marks, Media tiles (Photos & Videos), and Weekly thumbs feedback (👍 This hit the mark / 👎 Needs adjustment). The thumbs widget is your fastest way to steer content direction.
5.4 — Campaign History · Archives
All past weeks, grouped by 4-week campaign months. Each week cell shows progress bar, 14 step dots, expandable checklist, and photo/video album cards with previews. Three charts appear once you have 2+ weeks: Week-over-week dual-axis, Platform comparison stacked, and Month-level aggregates.
5.5 — Audience Breakdown · Demographics
Gender split and top territories (countries). Reflects live data during early campaign phase — geography narrows as targeting matures.
5.6 — Amazon Performance + KDP Upload · ROI
The most ROI-relevant section. Shows BSR, Reviews, KENP Reads, Units Sold, Royalty, Rank Goals, BSR trend, and Campaign Impact correlation block.
KDP CSV Upload Protocol
1. Go to KDP → Reports → Sales Dashboard → Export CSV.
2. Click "Choose CSV File" in your portal.
3. We match it to your campaign timeline automatically.
4. See units sold, KENP reads, and royalties side-by-side with your content output.
5.7 — Chat with Your Editor · Comms
Messages flow both ways. Unread count appears in the section header and browser tab title. Messages auto-mark-read after ~18 hours. Use this for: script feedback, hook ideas, pausing questions, anything.
5.8 — Campaign Notes · Strategy
Long-form notes your whole team can see. Use for: series-level strategy, character voice preferences, recurring hashtag sets, anything you don't want to repeat in chat.
5.9 — Pause & Resume · Controls
Pause: Click "⏸ Pause My Campaign" → optional reason → confirm. Your content history is always preserved. Resume: Requires invoice payment. Click "▶ Request to Resume Campaign" → your team sends the invoice → reactivation within 24 hours.
5.10 — Rate Your Experience · Feedback
Six star categories: Overall, Communication, Content Quality, Results, Turnaround, General Feel. The Overall auto-averages from the other five. Your editor sees every rating.
- Download your latest KDP CSV → upload it to the Amazon section.
- Send your editor a message asking about your top-performing video this week.
- Leave a thumbs-up or thumbs-down on this week's content.
- Save one note in Campaign Notes about your series direction.
Scaling Strategy
When to boost, when to open a Shop, when to upgrade tiers.
Scaling Triggers
- Boost proven winners, not recent uploads. Let data drive ad spend.
- Upgrade tiers when organic traction outpaces your current production capacity.
- Build a backlist. The goal isn't one book, it's an asset that compounds.
6.1 — TikTok Promote: The Right Way · Amplification
TikTok's built-in Promote feature pushes a video to a much larger lookalike audience. Inside the TikTok app: tap any posted video → More options (···) → Promote → choose goal → set daily budget & duration → Pay.
The Golden Rule
Promote your top performer, not your most recent video. Your portal's Top Videos table tells you which one that is. Promote costs are paid directly to TikTok, separate from your Atomic Shelf subscription.
6.2 — TikTok Shop (Optional, Self-Managed) · Monetization
TikTok Shop lets you sell directly inside TikTok. Tiered campaigns: SS/S (Black Friday-scale, 20-30% discount), A (Seasonal, moderate discount), B (Category-specific, lower discount). Recommendation: Set up Shop after 4-6 weeks of active content. Start with a B-tier campaign to test.
6.3 — Amazon DSP Campaigns · Retargeting
Once a video crosses 5,000 views, it qualifies for a small Amazon DSP campaign — retargeting the viewers your content already reached to push your book's BSR rank. Your team manages this automatically at Momentum and Growth tiers.
6.4 — When to Upgrade Tiers · Expansion
| Signal | Action |
|---|---|
| Top video crosses 5K views | Momentum or higher (unlocks DSP) |
| Selling 50+ units/month | Growth (25 ARC reviews, monthly newsletter feature) |
| Multiple books in catalogue | Surge or Orbit (custom pricing) |
| Maintenance mode for 3+ months | Consider Spark ($20/mo) to keep content flowing |
6.5 — Compounding Across Books · The Endgame
The real goal isn't one book — it's a backlist. Each launch builds on the last because your TikTok following carries over, your reader list grows, your editor team knows what hooks worked, your listing copy templates are reusable, and your ad audiences are pre-warmed. By book 3 or 4, launches get cheaper and faster.
- Identify your top-performing video (Top Videos table).
- If it's above 5,000 views, message your editor about running Amazon DSP.
- Decide whether you'll open a TikTok Shop — write your decision in Campaign Notes.
- List your next book idea in Campaign Notes so your team can start planning hooks.
