How to Find Legitimate Free Ebook Sources

The categories of genuinely free ebook source, what rights each rests on, and the single question that separates all of them from a pirated copy.

Evergreen No expiry

There is more genuinely free material available legally than most people realise, because the reasons books are free are varied and each carries different rights.

Category one: copyright has expired

The oldest and largest. Project Gutenberg is the largest single instance, hosting tens of thousands of public-domain texts. Because the copyright has expired, anyone may distribute these files, which is why the collection can be as large as it is and can be mirrored legally.

Category two: the rights holder gave them away

Standard Ebooks is the clearest example: volunteer-edited, professionally formatted editions of public-domain texts, free to download with no account and no obligation. The rights are the same as category one, but the presentation is deliberately better than a plain text file.

Category three: lending, not owning

Digital lending libraries let you borrow a copy for a fixed period. Open Library and the library platforms most public systems use are in this category. Nothing here is free in the sense of being yours to keep, and the difference matters: a lending licence is a licence, not a transfer.

Category four: promotional, and temporary

Retailers and publishers periodically offer a book at zero cost to drive acquisition. The mechanism is normal and the offers are legitimate. What to watch is the end date: most are tied to the retailer account and to a specific format, and the right to the file ends when the promotion does.

The question that separates all of them

Ask why this book is free, and see whether the answer is a rights basis or an explanation. A rights basis sounds like one of the four above: the copyright expired, the author released it, it is a loan, or it is a promotion. An explanation sounds like asking you to trust a site, disable a scanner, or download an app.

One question, four legitimate answers

A legitimate free book will always be able to explain its own freedom. That is a much more reliable test than the price, the quality, or how quickly it downloaded.
