Service deep dive

Audiobook creation is not currently offered, and what happens instead

We do not produce audiobooks and make no promise to. What this page is for is explaining the decision, and pointing you at audiobook marketing, which we do offer.

Atomic Shelf does not currently produce audiobooks. There is no narration service, no recording facility, no voice talent on retainer and no pipeline behind that door — which means we cannot quote you a price, a turnaround or a finished file. We are writing this article anyway, because a page that quietly omits the service is worse than a page that says plainly it is not there, and because authors researching audiobook production deserve a straight answer rather than a discovery halfway through a contract.

What we do not offer here

  • No narration. We are not casting, directing or recording voices, and we are not subcontracting that to a studio while implying otherwise.
  • No mastering, editing or packaging. Nothing is cleaned up, levelled, tagged with retail metadata or delivered as a finished file.
  • No quote and no timeline. We will not give you either, because giving either would be a promise we cannot keep.
  • No bundle, add-on or conversation-based exception. It is not on any plan and it is not available by arrangement.

Why production is not on the service list

An audiobook is not a marketing deliverable. It is a production with a voice at the centre of it, and that means casting, direction, editing hours and rights. None of that exists here yet. Publishing a service page for work we cannot perform would be the exact thing this site is trying not to be — a claim with nothing behind it. So the record is: this service has never been available, and reinstating it would take a working narration path and a decision to build one, not a copy change.

The marketing service that is available now

Audiobook marketing is real, available now, and available independently. It works on an audiobook that already exists — one you recorded yourself, one another studio produced, or one you paid a narrator for. The service covers narrative-led short-form content, promotional concepts built around narration and character, promotion into the reader communities where listeners gather, and cross-promotion between your print, ebook and audiobook editions. It does not require that Atomic Shelf made the audio, and it never will.

The shape of a production job

Since you may be here to work this out regardless, the shape of the job. You are choosing a narrator, agreeing rights for the text and for any music or third-party material, booking studio time or recording at home with a treated room, then directing the read. Editing is the longest part: breaths, misreads, level balance, room tone. After that comes retail metadata — narrator credit, length, unabridged status — and distribution. It is a multi-week process with a dozen handoffs, and the parts authors most often underestimate are the rights clearances and the edit.

Who this page is really for

If you came here hoping to commission a finished audiobook, we cannot help and we would rather tell you now. If you already have one — or are partway through producing one — and you want it found, then audiobook marketing is the service that applies, and it starts with a finished, live edition and a retail link. If you are still deciding whether to produce one at all, that is a genuine commercial question about your genre and your backlist rather than something we can answer for you.

The few minutes this page is worth

Reading this page costs a few minutes and saves a conversation. If you want the marketing service, the real ask is your time: the finished audio, the retail link, the edition details, and any rights restrictions — passages you cannot use publicly, music that is licensed elsewhere — before concepts get built on them.

What you should leave with

For us, it is that you know what we do before you spend anything. No quotation, no timeline, no invoice for a service that does not exist. If you have an audiobook, marketing it is a real service with real content behind it and we will happily talk it through.

Questions we get about Audiobook creation

Can you produce my audiobook if I ask specially?

No. There is no narration capability here to draw on, so a special request would still produce nothing. We would rather turn the conversation towards audiobook marketing, which is a service we can actually deliver. If you need production, you will need a studio or a freelance narrator, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

What about audiobook marketing, then?

That is a real and active service, and it does not depend on us producing the audio. Bring an audiobook that already exists — yours, another studio's, or one you recorded yourself — and the work is the same: narrative-led short-form content, concepts built around the narration and characters, promotion into listener communities, and cross-promotion between your editions.

Will audiobook creation ever be offered?

We cannot promise a date, and you should discount anyone who does. Reinstating it would require a working narration path and an explicit commercial decision to build one — which is a larger piece of work than adding a service page. Until that exists, this page stands, and the marketing service is what we can offer.
