TikTok advertising & performance

From TikTok Viewer to Customer

The path is longer than the click and has at least four steps. Knowing which one is leaking is most of the value of running this channel.

Evergreen No expiry

The single most common error in treating TikTok as a sales channel is to measure it as a funnel of two states: saw the ad, bought the book. There are at least four states, and each transition loses people for a different reason requiring a different fix.

The four steps

  1. Stopped scrolling. The video held attention past the first seconds. Loss here is a creative fault, and no downstream fix helps.
  2. Clicked or sought out. The viewer wanted to know more. Loss here means the ad created interest without giving a reason to act.
  3. Understood the offer. They reached the product or landing page and grasped what was on offer. Loss here is a listing problem: unclear cover, unclear price, unclear premise.
  4. Committed. Purchase, or a start of reading. Loss here is price, format or trust.

Which step is leaking

Each step has a different signature, and the platform reports enough to tell them apart.

High views and low click-through means step one is fine and step two is failing: the content is watchable but has no reason attached to it. Good click-through and poor landing-page behaviour means step three: people arrive expecting something and do not find it. Good traffic and poor conversion at the cart means step four, and no amount of advertising will fix it.

The step that is usually missed

Step three is where books specifically lose people. A viewer arrives from a video about a genre, and the product page is a photograph of a paperback with no indication of why this particular book suits them. The interest was real and the page did not answer it. This is a merchandising problem being mistaken for an advertising problem, and it is the most reliably fixable of the four.

The honest summary

Traffic from this channel is a hypothesis. It becomes a result only at step four, and every step before that can be improved without any of it meaning the last step will be. Measuring only the first step is how campaigns come to look successful while producing nothing.
