Why TikTok Ads Can Generate Views Without Sales

Attention and purchase are different things the algorithm optimises for separately. Recognising the gap is most of the work of reading a campaign honestly.

Evergreen No expiry

A campaign that generates a great deal of attention and no sales is not necessarily a failure. It is often a campaign that is being measured incorrectly, or one that is optimising for the wrong thing, or one whose offer does the work too late.

The three real causes

Optimisation is set to the wrong event. TikTok's delivery optimises toward the event you designate. Optimise for traffic on a book with a twelve-dollar margin and you will buy traffic, because traffic is what you asked for. The platform is doing exactly its job.

Attention is being mistaken for relevance. A video that stops the scroll has demonstrated it can hold a viewer, which is not the same as demonstrating the viewer wants this book. Highly entertaining content routinely produces the weakest traffic in a campaign.

The offer arrives after the exit. In a very short video the entire pitch may be compressed into two seconds at the end, or assumed from the post. A viewer who swipes at four seconds never sees the argument for why they should spend money.

What to check, in order

  1. Is the optimisation event a purchase or a page view? If not a purchase, expect traffic, not sales.
  2. Does the click-to-site rate differ much from the add-to-cart rate? A big drop means the listing, not the ad, is losing people.
  3. Is there a landing step the viewer has to complete before the offer makes sense? Every step loses people, and on a cold audience the loss compounds.

The number that actually matters

View-through conversions, the metric that credits a sale to an ad the viewer scrolled past, are the reason a campaign can appear to succeed while contributing nothing. When a large share of reported conversions are view-through, treat the reported return as a ceiling rather than a measurement, and decide from the click-through path instead.
