How the Readers catalogue is actually built

Where the books on this site come from, how a title earns its place, and what we do when the underlying data disagrees with itself.

Every book on this site arrives by one of two routes. Either our team ingests it from Open Library, a public catalogue of published works, or an author submits it themselves and we review it.

What a title has to have

A title needs enough metadata to be identifiable: a title, an author, and a publication year we can trust. A book with no reliable date is not excluded, but it is not filed under a publication era either, because guessing would put the wrong book in front of a reader looking for something else.

How a book is categorised

Genres come from the catalogue's own subject tags rather than from a keyword scan of the title, so a book called "Fantasy of the Heart" is not filed as fantasy merely because of its name. Where a book matches more than one genre it keeps them all, with the classifier's primary choice shown on the card.

Publication eras

The era filters are defined by year, and they overlap on purpose. A book published in the last couple of years is both a new release and contemporary fiction; Timeless Classics covers everything up to the end of the last century. Choosing one narrows the shelf without hiding the other reading.

Adding your own book

If your book is missing, or was filed under the wrong genre, submit it here. Submissions are reviewed by the team before they appear. Nothing is published automatically.
