Service deep dive

What a managed Amazon DSP budget is actually for

A fixed monthly spend run on your behalf inside Amazon's advertising system, targeting readers your content has already identified rather than searching for keywords you bid on.

Amazon DSP is Amazon's own demand-side platform: you buy audiences rather than keywords, and the platform finds people whose behaviour resembles the ones you specified. It is a different mechanism from Sponsored Products, and it sits on a different side of Amazon's system from your book's detail page. This service is available on Starter and exists to put paid amplification on top of the organic content already running, for an author who does not want to manage an advertising account themselves.

A managed budget spent in your name

  • A managed monthly budget, spent on your behalf rather than transferred to you to spend.
  • Audience definitions built from what your content is already doing — the genres, subgenres and comparable titles whose readers respond to the work you are publishing.
  • Campaign structure and ongoing management, with the account monitored day to day by the outreach team.
  • Reporting that separates paid delivery from organic delivery, so you can see what the money did rather than a blended figure that flatters everything.

How a display campaign is set up and targeted

  • Access and setup. Access to your advertising account is arranged through you, because the spend sits in your name and needs your authorisation.
  • Targeting. Rather than bidding on search terms, the campaign selects audiences by what they read and how they behave. The genres that matter for your book are identified and matched.
  • Creative. The ads use the video and trailer work already being produced. Nothing new is invented for the paid layer; it reuses what the organic layer is already making.
  • Monitoring and adjustment. Campaigns run at a modest daily spend and are watched rather than left alone. Underperforming audiences get dropped.

The authorisation a managed budget depends on

Authorisation for the spend, and access to the relevant account so it can be set up in your name. That is genuinely the main ask. If you also have planned discount dates, telling us in advance lets the paid layer run alongside the promotional work rather than against it.

Why this is not a search campaign in disguise

The most common misunderstanding is expecting this to behave like search advertising. DSP buys attention in front of people who have not yet decided to buy your book. It is a slower mechanism than a keyword campaign and it behaves differently, and treating it as a version of Sponsored Products leads to the wrong expectations. The second thing that goes wrong is a small budget spread across too many audiences, so no single one gets enough delivery to learn anything from.

Who a managed advertising budget will not suit

Not for an author who has not published yet — there is no listing for the traffic to land on and no purchase history to target around. Not for authors who want control of creative, bids and audience settings themselves; this is a managed service, not an account handed over. And not for anyone who needs a specific number of sales in a specific month. Paid amplification increases what the organic work reaches; it does not manufacture demand for a book nobody has wanted yet.

The small time a managed budget asks for

Setting up access at the start, and then a periodic look at the paid-versus-organic split. Ongoing involvement is low. The larger time commitment is indirect: reading the report honestly and accepting that a small budget buying a narrow audience is the design, not a mistake.

What a managed advertising budget is judged on

Success is paid delivery you can attribute separately, and a clearer picture of which audiences the organic content is genuinely reaching. If you are looking for the paid layer to carry the campaign on its own, this service is not designed for that and we would tell you so before you buy it.

Questions we get about Amazon DSP ad budget

How is this different from Amazon Sponsored Products?

Sponsored Products is a search and product-targeting tool you bid on inside Amazon's marketplace, aimed at people already searching or browsing. DSP buys audiences across Amazon's wider properties based on behaviour and reading habits. They are different products with different reporting, and one is not a substitute for the other. We can talk through which fits your stage.

What happens if the campaign is not working?

We monitor it and change what is not performing. If the whole approach is wrong for your book or your stage, we will say so rather than keep spending. Our commitment covers non-delivery — the agreed work not being done at all. It is not a guarantee that results hit a particular figure, and anyone who promises you that is guessing.

Can I change the budget during the month?

Yes, and we will factor it into the plan rather than treating it as an exception. If you upgrade or downgrade a plan, current ad spend is taken into account and applied as credit toward the new plan, so the money is not simply lost.
