Module 11 — Calls to Action and Campaign Objectives

Category: Finishing | Duration: ~45 min | Prerequisites: Module 04

Learning Objective

By the end of this module, you will be able to distinguish between awareness, engagement, discovery, traffic, and conversion campaign objectives, write CTAs that match the specific objective, verify time-sensitive promotional details before publication, and avoid promising sales, guaranteed virality, or reader outcomes.

1. Principle: One CTA Per Video, Aligned to One Objective

The Five Campaign Objectives

Every video serves one primary objective from the campaign brief. Understanding the difference determines your CTA.

ObjectiveWhat it meansWhat the viewer doesCTA examples
Awareness"People know this book exists"See the video"Discover the book."
Engagement"People interact with the content"Like, comment, share"What would you do? Comment below."
Discovery"People find the book"Visit profile, search book"Find your next read."
Traffic"People click through"Click bio link"Explore the full description."
Conversion"People buy or subscribe"Purchase / KU read"Read today — link in bio."

Rule: Use one primary CTA per standard short video. If the brief requires more, each must serve the same objective.

CTA Selection Matrix

Not every CTA works with every objective:

ObjectiveGood CTAsBad CTAs
Awareness"Discover the book.""Buy now!"
Engagement"What would you do?""Click the link."
Discovery"Find your next read.""Limited time offer!"
Traffic"Explore the full description.""Bestseller!"
Conversion"Check the current offer.""Guaranteed results!"

The CTA Spectrum: Soft → Hard

Soft (Discovery)Medium (Traffic)Hard (Conversion)
"Discover the book.""Explore the full description.""Check the current offer."
"Find your next read.""See the current price.""Read today — link in bio."
"Save this for your reading list.""Read an excerpt.""Free with Kindle Unlimited."

Match the CTA to the campaign's stage. Early in a campaign: soft. Late: hard.

2. Verifying Time-Sensitive Promotions

For time-sensitive offers, verify BEFORE publication:

  1. The offer — what is being promoted?
  2. Eligibility — who qualifies?
  3. Destination — where does the link go?
  4. End date — when does it expire?
  5. Terms — any conditions?

Time-Sensitive CTA Protocol

StepAction
1Check the campaign brief for promotional dates
2Verify the destination URL resolves correctly
3Confirm the offer is active (price, KU status, discount)
4Note the end date in the video's metadata
5If the offer has expired, do NOT use time-sensitive CTAs

What NOT to Promise

Never promise:

  • Sales or purchases
  • Guaranteed virality or view counts
  • Specific reader outcomes
  • Bestseller status
  • Awards or recognition
  • Undeniable or absolute results

Approved CTA Language

These are always safe (assuming the campaign brief authorizes them):

  • "Discover the book."
  • "Find your next read."
  • "Explore the full description."
  • "Save this for your reading list."
  • "Read more about the book."
  • "Check the current offer."
  • "Free sample available."
  • "Free with Kindle Unlimited."

3. Visual Demonstration

Professional Example — CTA Aligned to Objective

Book: Untold Stories of a Paramedic Objective: Discovery (BookTok audience finding the book)

Final 2 seconds of the video:

TEXT: "True stories — link in bio."
VO: "Untold Stories of a Paramedic. Twenty-five dollars in paperback."
CTA: "Link in bio."

Why it works:

  • CTA matches the discovery objective
  • "Link in bio" is the platform-native action
  • No invented claims
  • Price is a verified fact
  • Duration is 2 seconds (enough to read)

Weak Example — Misaligned CTA

Final 2 seconds of the video:

TEXT: "🔥🔥🔥 VIRAL BOOK ALERT! 🔥🔥🔥
BUY NOW BEFORE IT SELLS OUT!
#1 BESTSELLER INCOMING!"
VO: "This book will blow your mind!"

Why it fails:

  • CTA ("buy now") is too hard for a discovery objective
  • Promises virality (unverified claim)
  • Claims bestseller status (invented)
  • "Blows your mind" is an empty superlative
  • No link — "buy now" without direction

4. Step-by-Step Workflow

1. Read the Campaign Brief

  1. Identify the stated objective (awareness, engagement, discovery, traffic, conversion)
  2. Note any specific CTA requirements
  3. Check for time-sensitive offers
  4. Review any CTA restrictions

2. Match CTA to Objective

  1. Use the CTA Selection Matrix above
  2. If multiple objectives exist, clarify which is primary
  3. Write the CTA in the script's final 1–2 seconds

3. Verify Time-Sensitive Details

  1. If using time-sensitive language, verify the offer is current
  2. Confirm the destination link works
  3. Note the end date
  4. If expired, switch to a soft CTA

4. Test the CTA

  1. Does it match the objective? If not, change it.
  2. Is it on screen long enough? Minimum 1.5 seconds
  3. Is it readable? 4.5:1 contrast, ≥108px title
  4. Does it contain unverified claims? If yes, remove
  5. Is there only one CTA? If multiple, clarify with the operator

5. Common Mistakes and Corrections

MistakeCorrection
Multiple CTAs in one videoOne primary CTA; clarify with operator if needed
CTA doesn't match objectiveUse the matrix to align
Promising guaranteed resultsRemove all certainty claims
Claiming bestseller statusOnly state verified facts
CTA too short on screenMinimum 1.5 seconds
CTA unreadableIncrease size, improve contrast
Unverified time-sensitive offersVerify before publication
Inventing reader outcomesRemove "will change your life" type claims

6. Hands-On Exercise

Using the book assets/books/a-siren-sings.md, write three campaign-specific endings for three different objectives:

Ending 1 — Discovery Objective

  • Target: Readers who love regency romance
  • CTA: Find the book

Ending 2 — Traffic Objective

  • Target: Kindle Unlimited readers
  • CTA: Explore the description / read now

Ending 3 — Conversion Objective (time-sensitive)

  • Target: Price-conscious romance readers
  • CTA: Check the current offer

For each ending, include:

  1. The VO line (≤15 words)
  2. The on-screen text (≤30 chars per line, 2 lines max)
  3. The duration on screen (≥1.5s)
  4. Justification for why this CTA matches the objective
  5. Verification that no unverified claims are made

7. Assessment

Scored assessment (25 points total):

CriterionPoints
Three endings for three objectives6 (2 per ending)
Each CTA matches its objective6 (2 per ending)
Each CTA contains no unverified claims3
VO and text are complementary3
Duration and readability correct3
Justification is sound4
Total25

Pass threshold: 22/25

Submission Requirement: Submit the three campaign-specific endings with VO, on-screen text, duration, objective justification, and claim verification.
