Module 12 — Multi-Platform Adaptation
Category: Finishing | Duration: ~60 min | Prerequisites: Module 08
Learning Objective
By the end of this module, you will be able to prepare content for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts without assuming identical audience behavior or publishing requirements. You will adapt one approved master video into platform-specific versions, document every change, and verify each version passes its own platform checklist.
1. Principle: Master Edit First, Then Adapt
Keep a master edit as your source of truth. Create platform-specific versions only when needed — and document every change.
Why Platforms Differ
Although TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts all use 9:16 vertical video, their requirements, audiences, and behaviors differ significantly:
| Aspect | TikTok | Instagram Reels | YouTube Shorts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary audience | Gen Z, Millennial | Millennial, Gen X | Broad, leaning younger |
| Optimal duration | 15–30s | 15–30s | 30–45s |
| Caption behavior | Auto-captions common | Auto-captions available | Auto-captions common |
| Caption safe zone | Bottom 15% | Bottom 15% | Bottom 15% |
| Thumbnail | Auto-generated | Cover required | Custom thumbnail |
| Description | 2,200 char limit | 2,200 char limit | 5,000 char limit |
| Hashtags | #BookTok culture heavy | #BookTok + Instagram tags | #Shorts + platform tags |
| Music restrictions | Broad commercial library | Instagram-owned library | YouTube-owned library |
| Link behavior | Bio link only | Bio link + Story link (10k+) | Description link + pinned |
| Interface overlays | Top-left: upload button | Top-left: story circle | None typically |
| Required disclosures | Paid partnership if applicable | Same | Same |
Rule: Do not assume that every platform accepts the same audio, caption, file size, or publishing workflow.

Professional Example — Master to Platform Adaptation
Master video: 30-second cut, "The Overdose" concept (paramedic) Master CTA: "True stories — link in bio."
TikTok Version
- Duration: 30s (unchanged)
- Captions: Burned-in, bottom 15% safe zone
- Hashtags: #BookTok #Paramedic #TrueStories #NonfictionBooks
- Description: "What really happens inside an ambulance? Read: https://..."
- Thumbnail: Auto-generated (key frame)
- Change: None from master — TikTok accepts all master elements
Instagram Reels Version
- Duration: 30s (unchanged)
- Captions: Burned-in, same as master
- Hashtags: #BookTok #Paramedic #TrueStories #NonfictionBooks
- Description: "True stories from the ambulance. Link in bio. #Reel"
- Thumbnail: Cover frame selected manually (platform requires)
- Change: Thumbnail selected manually; description slightly shortened
YouTube Shorts Version
- Duration: 30s (unchanged)
- Captions: Burned-in + YouTube auto-captions uploaded
- Hashtags: #Shorts #Paramedic #TrueStories #NonfictionBooks
- Description: "What really happens inside an ambulance? Full description below. Read: https://..."
- Thumbnail: Custom uploaded (platform requires)
- Change: Custom thumbnail uploaded; #Shorts tag added; longer description
Weak Example — Assumed Compatibility
Same video, same description, same hashtags posted to all three platforms. No platform-specific checks. No thumbnail customization. No caption verification. No hashtag adjustment.
Why it fails: Instagram may not pick a good thumbnail. YouTube needs #Shorts. TikTok's description length differs. Music licensed for one platform may be blocked on another.
3. Step-by-Step Workflow
1. Establish the Master
- Finalize the master edit — this is your source of truth
- Verify the master against the full QA checklist (Module 13)
- Export the master with filename:
BOOKSLUG_VIDEO01_MASTER_v01.mp4 - Confirm the master works on all three platforms at the technical level
2. Check Platform Requirements
For each platform, verify:
| Requirement | TikTok | YouTube | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | |||
| Max resolution | |||
| Max file size | |||
| Max duration | |||
| Accepted codec | |||
| Music/library | |||
| Caption support | |||
| Thumbnail requirements | |||
| Hashtag limits | |||
| Disclosure requirements |
3. Create Platform Versions
For each platform that needs a version:
- Duplicate the master
- Apply platform-specific changes (document each one)
- Verify against that platform's checklist
- Export with filename:
BOOKSLUG_VIDEO01_TIKTOK_APPROVED.mp4
4. Document Every Change
Use the Platform Adaptation Log:
| Platform | Master element | Change made | Reason | Verified |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | Captions | None | Master captions pass | ✅ |
| Thumbnail | Manual selection | Platform requires | ✅ | |
| YouTube | Hashtags | Added #Shorts | Required for Shorts feed | ✅ |
5. Quality Gate — Platform Check
Each version must pass:
- [ ] Preserves the central creative idea
- [ ] Passes its own platform checklist
- [ ] Caption placement adjusted if needed
- [ ] Thumbnail/ cover requirements met
- [ ] Hashtags appropriate for platform
- [ ] Description fits character limits
- [ ] Music/licensing verified for platform
- [ ] All required disclosures present
4. Common Mistakes and Corrections
| Mistake | Correction |
|---|---|
| Posting the same file everywhere | Check each platform's specific requirements |
| Ignoring thumbnail requirements | Select/upload platform-appropriate thumbnails |
| Same hashtags on every platform | Adjust per platform culture |
| Not verifying music licensing | Check each platform's library separately |
| Forgetting #Shorts for YouTube | Always add #Shorts to Shorts |
| Caption placement wrong per platform | Check overlay safe zones |
| No description customization | Tailor description to each platform |
| Assuming identical audience behavior | TikTok ≠ Instagram ≠ YouTube audience |
5. Hands-On Exercise
Using the video you assembled in Module 08 (the construction-disputes video), adapt the master into three platform-ready versions:
TikTok Version
- Verify 9:16, MP4, H.264
- Check caption safe zone (bottom 15%)
- Write platform-specific description (≤2,200 chars)
- Select 3–5 hashtags
Instagram Reels Version
- Same video, but select a thumbnail manually
- Write Reels-specific description
- Verify music licensing for Instagram's library
YouTube Shorts Version
- Add #Shorts hashtag
- Write longer description (≤5,000 chars)
- Prepare custom thumbnail
- Verify YouTube's caption support
Adaptation Log
Complete the log table documenting every change between the master and each platform version.
6. Assessment
Scored assessment (35 points total):
| Criterion | Points |
|---|---|
| Three platform versions planned | 6 (2 per platform) |
| Each version verified against platform requirements | 9 (3 per platform) |
| Hashtags are platform-appropriate | 3 |
| Descriptions fit character limits | 3 |
| Thumbnail requirements addressed | 3 |
| Music licensing verified per platform | 3 |
| Adaptation log documents every change | 5 |
| Central creative idea preserved | 3 |
| No assumed compatibility | 1 |
| Disclosures included where required | 2 |
| Total | 35 |
Pass threshold: 30/35
Submission Requirement: Submit the three platform-specific versions (or detailed descriptions if no access to platforms), the adaptation log, and verification that each version passes its own platform checklist.
