Module 16 — Final Production Challenge
Category: Professional Delivery | Duration: ~180 min | Prerequisites: All modules 01–15
Learning Objective
Demonstrate independent, end-to-end production capability by producing a complete book-promotion video from a raw book brief through final delivery. You will be evaluated on accuracy, storytelling, visual quality, editing, audio, technical compliance, organization, and independence.
1. Principle: Rigor Over Polish
A video that looks attractive but misrepresents the book does not pass. A factually accurate video that is difficult to understand or technically defective does not pass either.
This final challenge simulates a real production assignment. You will receive an approved brief, metadata, cover, campaign goal, and delivery specification. Everything depends on you.
1b. Visual Demonstration — Passing vs. Failing Submissions
Professional Example — Passing Final Submission
A submission for The Midnight Library that scores 92/100:
- Accuracy: Title "The Midnight Library," author "Matt Haig" correct. Cover is the official Viking edition. Every claim ("between life and death," "infinite number of books") traces to the publisher synopsis. No invented awards. No spoilers — the ending is not revealed. Price verified at $16.00 hardcover.
- Storytelling: Opens with a single lit book on a dark library shelf (hook at 0.3s). Visual: books floating in darkness. Payoff: "Do you have the courage to change your life?" Text on screen. CTA: "Discover the book — link in bio."
- Visual quality: Consistent midnight-blue palette throughout. No AI artifacts on hands (no hands shown). Caption-safe zones preserved. Shot variety: establishing (library), close-up (book), detail (floating pages), symbolic (light in darkness).
- Editing: 28 seconds total. Cuts serve narrative beats. Opening frame works without sound. Audio: VO at -9 LUFS, music at -16 LUFS.
- Delivery: Master + 3 platform versions. Correct filenames. Project file saved. QA checklist all gates pass.
Weak Example — Failing Final Submission
A submission that scores 42/100 and fails:
- Accuracy: Title says "Midnight Library" (missing "The"). Claims "bestselling author of 15 novels" (unverified — author bio says 8+ novels, not 15). Spoils the ending in the VO: "Nora chooses to return to her original life and becomes a writer." Reveals the choice in the text overlay.
- Storytelling: Opens with a text card: "AMAZING BOOK ALERT!" No hook. Shots jump randomly between library, storm, and book cover. CTA says "BUY NOW OR MISS OUT!" (too hard for discovery objective).
- Visual quality: Cover stretched vertically. Orange filter applied. Watermarked stock footage. Inconsistent lighting (library → storm → cover).
- Editing: 45 seconds (too long). Decorative transitions on every cut. Music louder than VO.
- Delivery: Single file named
video.mp4. No project file. QA checklist incomplete.
Key difference: The professional submission starts with the book and ends with a clear, honest next step. The weak submission starts with effects and ends with a hard sell.
2. Your Assignment
Book Assigned
Title: The Midnight Library Author: Matt Haig Genre: Fiction → Literary Fiction / Philosophical Campaign brief: "Promote to readers who feel stuck in life, trapped between choices. Show the concept of infinite parallel lives as both seductive and terrifying — not as a literal plot summary. Focus on the emotional dilemma, not the mechanics."

Restrictions
- Do NOT reveal specific plot points beyond the central premise
- Do NOT claim the book is a bestseller or has won awards
- Do NOT depict a real person's likeness
- Do NOT generate or substitute a book cover
- Do NOT promise life transformation or reader outcomes
- Spoilers must be avoided — especially the ending
3. Production Stages — Step-by-Step Workflow
You must independently complete all 15 steps. Do not proceed to the next step until the previous one is submitted and assessed by you using the checklist.
Stage 1: Source Validation (Gate A — Accuracy)
- Read the book metadata and campaign brief
- Complete the Source Fact-Check Sheet (Module 02 template)
- Identify missing facts — list them in a gap log
- Verify the cover is the approved official file
✅ Checkpoint: All factual claims traceable to source, or marked for approval.
Stage 2: Creative Development (Modules 03–05)
- Identify the target audience precisely (reader identity)
- Develop three distinct creative angles using the 13-angle framework
- Select the strongest angle and justify with source support
- Write and time the script using the Script Template — must be 20–30 seconds
- Verify every factual claim in the script
✅ Checkpoint: Script passes word count and timing, VO/text are complementary, CTA matches the discovery objective.
Stage 3: Storyboarding (Module 06)
- Build a scene-by-scene storyboard with 4–7 purposeful scenes
- Document all 15 fields for each scene
- Plan shot variety — no interchangeable cinematic shots
✅ Checkpoint: Another editor could execute the storyboard without guessing.
Stage 4: B-Roll Generation (Module 07)
- Write one precise prompt per scene using the Symphony prompt structure
- Generate candidate footage (2–3 takes per scene)
- Review and select the best take per scene
- Write continuity notes for each approved scene
✅ Checkpoint: All approved assets named and organized.
Stage 5: Editing (Modules 08–10)
- Assemble the video in the approved Google editing tool
- Sequence scenes in narrative order, trim to beats
- Integrate the book cover at the specified moment
- Add captions — full, accurate, readable, safe-zone
- Balance audio — VO, music, SFX at correct levels
- Verify the edit plays coherently
✅ Checkpoint: Edit matches the storyboard, opening frame works silently.
Stage 6: Multi-Platform Adaptation (Module 12)
- Create three platform versions — TikTok, IG Reels, YT Shorts
- Document every change in an adaptation log
- Verify each version passes its platform checklist
✅ Checkpoint: Each version preserves the creative idea and passes its checklist.
Stage 7: Quality Assurance (Module 13)
- Complete the full QA Checklist — all four gates
- Review the exported files (not just the timeline)
- Resolve all critical defects
- Document approval status
✅ Checkpoint: Zero critical defects in any gate.
Stage 8: Asset Management & Packaging (Module 14)
- Create the 10-folder workspace structure
- Apply filename conventions to every file
- Document version history and rejected takes
- Write the asset inventory
✅ Checkpoint: Another editor can continue without verbal instructions.
Stage 9: Production Report (Module 16)
- Complete the Production Report Template
- Document all decisions and outstanding limitations
- Self-assess using the Final Rubric (below)
4. Final Rubric (100 Points)

7. Timeline and Process
| Day | Work |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Stages 1–2 (Source validation, creative development, script) |
| Day 2 | Stages 3–4 (Storyboard, B-roll generation) |
| Day 3 | Stages 5–6 (Editing, platform adaptation) |
| Day 4 | Stages 7–8 (QA, packaging) |
| Day 5 | Stage 9 (Production report, self-assessment) |
Note: If you cannot access TikTok Symphony or the Google editing tool, produce written equivalents — detailed prompt sets, shot compositions, edit timelines, and export specifications. The skills being assessed are judgment, planning, and execution — not tool access.
8. Assessment Process
Self-Assessment (Day 5)
- Complete the Production Report with honest self-evaluation
- Score your work against the 100-point rubric
- Note any critical defects — if any exist, the work is incomplete
Peer Review (Optional)
If another student is available, they review your submission using the same rubric. This is practice for the professional review process.
Instructor Review
The final submission is evaluated against the rubric. Feedback is provided through the standard review workflow (see Module 13, Stage 7).
9. Success Criteria
A passing submission demonstrates that the editor can:
- [ ] Extract an accurate creative brief from approved metadata
- [ ] Generate multiple original promotional concepts
- [ ] Write a concise, timed script
- [ ] Create a scene-by-scene storyboard
- [ ] Generate and evaluate suitable B-roll in TikTok Symphony
- [ ] Assemble a coherent vertical video in the approved Google editing tool
- [ ] Integrate the real book cover, readable captions, appropriate audio, and an accurate CTA
- [ ] Export and verify the final file
- [ ] Organize the project so another editor can reproduce or continue the work
- [ ] Identify defects before delivery
- [ ] Explain creative decisions and use available performance data responsibly
10. Final Submission
Submit your complete package as a ZIP file with the full folder structure intact. Include a production-report.md at the root.
Deadline: End of Day 5.
If critical defects are found in review, you have 24 hours to correct and resubmit.
Final decision: Pass (≥85/100 + zero critical defects) / Fail (corrections required / significant gaps).
